Joint or Seperate Finances

There’s a post over on Get Rich Slowly discussing whether it’s better to have a joint account or separate accounts when you get married.
I’m not married, though I can’t say that I haven’t thought about this question myself.
I think when I get married I would prefer to have both. I think it would be easier to pay bills and any other joint needs (groceries, home stuff, etc…) out of a joint account and still have small separate accounts in order to limit any “surprises” at the checkout counter or uneven spending.
I basically do that now – and it’s just me.
I have the majority of my money deposited into my credit union account and a small spending portion placed into my Bank of America account. I think it works – it basically keeps me on budget and I can see how it would alleviates headaches once another person is added to the mix.
Anyone else have thoughts about this?
